Effective UN32 Strategies in Flood-Irrigated Almond Orchards

In this blog post, I’m sharing my preferred way to apply UN32 in my flood-irrigated almond orchard. As an almond grower in Northern California, I typically apply UN32 during the first and second irrigations of the season, which occur shortly after flower petal drop. This timing aligns with the critical leaf push phase, when almond trees require additional nitrogen for optimal growth.

    Application Strategy

To meet the nitrogen needs of my almond orchard, I apply 80 units of nitrogen during both the first and second irrigations. Given my flood irrigation setup, I utilize a tag-along applicator, commonly known as a dribbler, to distribute the fertilizer. I target the application to the tree’s drip-line area, approximately 2-3 feet from the tree center, ensuring efficient nutrient uptake. Following fertilizer application, I begin irrigation to incorporate the nutrients into the soil.

    Seasonal Nitrogen Management

Throughout the growing season, I aim to apply a total of 200 to 240 units of nitrogen per acre. This approach aligns with recommendations suggesting that nitrogen application should correspond to the projected yield, with approximately 1/10 pound of actual nitrogen applied for each pound of expected kernel yield.

For instance, a projected yield of 3,500 pounds per acre would necessitate 350 pounds of nitrogen per acre. Adjustments are made based on soil sampling results, and additional nutrients like zinc are incorporated as needed.

    Orchard Specifications and Performance

My almond trees are planted with 21-foot row spacing and 15-foot tree spacing, featuring the Independence variety grafted onto Nemaguard rootstock. In 2024, during their ninth leaf year, the orchard yielded an impressive 3,500 pounds per acre, reflecting the effectiveness of tailored nutrient management practices.

    Additional Recommendations for Almond Growers

To enhance nitrogen use efficiency and orchard health, consider the following practices:

    • Split Applications: Applying nitrogen in multiple smaller doses throughout the growing season can improve efficiency and reduce the risk of nutrient loss.
    • Soil Testing: Regular soil analysis helps determine nitrogen availability and informs fertilizer recommendations.
    • Cover Crops: Incorporating nitrogen-fixing cover crops can contribute to the orchard’s nitrogen supply.
